of 18 months without a competitive defeat
to local rivals, Leicester University Jesters.
This run of victories was capped with an outstanding
game at Outdoor Regionals, where the Demons
dealt the Jesters a crushing defeat to win 15-3.
This was followed a week later by a close victory
in the Varsity match. The first year ended on
a high note at the Colours Awards, with a drunken
speech from Chairman Andy Lee being a particular
highlight. In their first year as a team, the
Demons finished ninth at Outdoor Regionals and
this was a fantastic achievement by all involved.
At the beginning of the 2005/2006 University
year, the Demons sadly lost a number of members
but the majority of the regular squad remained.
Chairman Andy Lee, vice captain Moggy and key
team members David Tomlinson, Joe Beales, Kev
Veitch and Tim Blackburn were all present as
the Demons geared up for their second year as
a team. The squad’s main aim for the second
year was to recruit more players and build on
the foundation that was started in the previous
year. Andy Lee also believed that the team would
be able to improve on their divisional ranking
of twelve from last year. After a promising
Fresher’s Fair, the squad was bolstered
by new members, but for one reason or another
a number of them didn’t actively participate
until after Christmas.
The Indoor Regionals brought some good fortune
for the Demons though as six players went to
Birmingham and came back with good victories
over University of Birmingham, Oxford Brookes
and Loughborough. A narrow defeat against the
Warwick Bears saw the Demons rise to a very
respectable eleventh and began to show a great
improvement from the first year. Outdoor Regionals
saw the squad come together properly for the
first time. New members Mitch Loan, Max Von
Anrep, Matt Allison and Rich Gemmell made their
competitive debuts for the club and impressed
all. The Demons enjoyed a successful run into
tenth position and participated in two tough
games against the Warwick Bears, who were fast
becoming a thorn in the side of the Demons.
However, the luck of the Demons against the
Bears changed at the first ever University Ladder
League fixtures where the Demons managed to
overthrow them, confusing them with their tight
zonal defence to take the victory. The club
rose to be ranked seventh in the region and
fully deserved the progress the club had made
in such a short space of time.
